More Melfort trails getting paved

More walking trails in Melfort are getting paved this year and next.

“With nice paved pathways, that gives people more opportunities to get out and explore,” Melfort City Manager Adam Homes said. “They are fully accessible, we are also going to put out a few more benches and receptacles for waste and recycling and some bike racks.”

Homes told Melfort council the city budgeted $50,000 to upgrade the existing trail system in 2022, and in 2023. But the city applied for an Active Transportation Grant from the federal government, and received another $145,000.

“It’s about 2.4 kilometers that we did, and so we did almost triple what we were planning,” he said.

Homes said this year the work involved paths along Saskatchewan Drive and Spruce Haven Park.

Coun. Brian Enge said it’s another example of how having “shovel ready” projects is helping the city get things done.

A report to council said having projects ready to go when funding becomes available is important.

“Then we took that money and leveraged it and made an application to the federal government for their active transportation fund,” Homes said. “We were able to leverage that funding and got more money.”

The project will be completed in 2023. Melfort has around six kilometers of walking trails. The report said the next priority pathway will be the former CN Row from Saskatchewan Drive to Burns Avenue.
