Melfort Curling Club requests over $600K from city

The City of Melfort has some big decisions ahead as it tries to figure out its relationship with the local curling rink.

This year members of the Melfort Curling Club are working hard toward its revitalization project with multiple fundraisers and grant applications.

Now, the club is turning to the city to begin phase two of the project, as members ask local taxpayers to cover some costs.

At the most recent community services committee meeting, the club requested $600,000 from the city, over a three-year time period, while also including any additional costs associated with hiring a project manager.

The information has since been passed on to administrators as they begin discussions to initiate and develop a memorandum of understanding to define the relationship between the two parties and the role the city will take in potentially assisting the club in the future.

The club is currently privately owned and therefore not a listed responsibility of the city.

Chairperson and city councillor Brian Enge told northeastNOW the club “is a wonderful facility that is operated independently through a great source of employees and volunteers” and the city wants it to succeed.

“The curling club is something that the City of Melfort would most definitely want to see continue operating to their high standards,” Enge said.

However, with the large amount requested, there are many contingencies and systematics in play.

“The City of Melfort will look at avenues to be able to work together with the Melfort Curling Club so that they can continue to keep operating within the community as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement from Kerrie DeGooijer, the project chair, she said they have been having discussions with the city for nearly a year now.

“We are looking forward to a continued strong relationship and in the meantime, we want to focus our volunteer and staff efforts on providing great programming.”
