Mustangs return home for mid-week battle with Red Wings

Nov 16, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Confidence is high for the Melfort Mustangs after a succesful weekend on the road.

Melfort took both games in Estevan on Friday and Saturday by 6-2 and 6-1 scores respectively. There was clearly no rust for the Mustangs who were also returning from nine days off.

“Came back from our big break and everyone was raring to go, everyone was ready,” Mustangs Defenceman Leith Olafson said. “Came out, 12 goals in two games. I think we’re kind of getting into a rhythm now.”

Melfort will welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to the Palace on Wednesday for the two teams’ second of four meetings this season. The first meeting was in Melfort just a few weeks ago, a game that saw Melfort win 3-2. It was a game that saw Red Wings goalie Eric Kahl play extremely well, only allowing one goal until the third period.

“Got a whole bunch of shots on him and just couldn’t put too many in the net until the third period,” Olafson said. “But I think after this last weekend, scoring so many goals, I think we’ll be just fine against them.”

Olafson said they need to prepare like they did over the weekend and continue creating offence.

Melfort now sits at 9-8-4-0 on the season, and are sixth in the SJHL standings with 22 points. Weyburn is 8-11-0-1 on the year, good for 17 points and ninth in the SJHL, just one point back of the final playoff spot.

Game time on Wednesday is 7:30 p.m. at the Palace.
