Mid-Somers' night dream

Somers snipes two in Mustangs win over Wings

Nov 17, 2022 | 9:41 AM

It’s now three wins in a row for the Melfort Mustangs after a 4-1 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings on Wednesday night at the Palace.

It was a real gut-check win for the Mustangs who were without their leading scorer on defence in Leyton Holoien, as well as three players with letters on their chest as captain Ben Tkachuk, and assistants Leith Olafson and Clarke Huxley were unable to go in the contest as well.

However, with numerous veteran bodies out of the lineup, it was Zac Somers who shined in the victory. He said it didn’t have to be a pretty win tonight.

“Just stuck it out for the full sixty, ups and downs,” Somers said. “And just stuck with it until we got the result we wanted.”

The 18-year-old local product opened the scoring for Melfort at the 8:30 mark of the first period on a powerplay, which was followed by a Wyatt Day goal about 10 mintues later.

Somers’ second of the night came in the third period to restore the Mustangs’ two-goal lead just 37 seconds after the Red Wings had brought it to within one. David Rioux’s first of his career into the empty net was the icing on the cake for the Mustangs who won their tenth game of the season.

Somers said after some adversity early in the season, the team is really starting to find something.

“Good things to come here,” he said. “We’re stringing a couple of wins together and the boys are really gelling together.”

The Mustangs are back at it on Saturday night when they visit the Humboldt Broncos.
