The Melfort Mustangs are welcoming a new member to the club this week.

The team announced Monday it acquired 2003-born defenceman Owen Palfreyman from the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in exchange for a Player Development Fee (PDF).

Palfreyman has played in 14 games with the Storm this season, notching two assists and has 45 penalty minutes. Last season, Plafreyman played in 26 games for the Storm, adding five assists and collecting 92 minutes in penalties.

“Owen is a big, strong defender with a fair amount of experience,” Mustangs Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins said. “He plays the game tough and uses his size to his advantage. We look to him to contribute to our already strong defence core.”

The resident of Whitehorse, Yukon spent the 2020/2021 season with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, playing 12 games for them in the COVID-shortened season.

In 2018/2019, Palfreyman was a member of Team Yukon at the Canada Winter Games, scoring one goal at the tournament.

The Mustangs’ next game is scheduled for Friday night as they welcome the Flin Flon Bombers.
