Melfort Museum Hosts Christmas Village

Christmas Village in Melfort opens this week

Christmas Village at the Melfort and District Museum is back this week, starting Friday, Dec. 2.

It’s the second year for the display at the museum.

“We have a settlers’ village and other buildings, some 22 buildings, and they are all decorated with lights. It looks very beautiful,” Gailmarie Anderson, the museum’s curator, said. “In the middle of this giant oval they walk around we have created a ‘back 40’ and decorated a whole bunch of our machinery. We also have a roaring fire people can sit around every night, and we serve hot cider.”

The show starts Friday, and runs until just before Christmas.

“It is open for 12 different nights, starting Dec. 2, and ending Dec. 23, it’s open 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the three weekends, and then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the last Christmas week,” Anderson said.

Anderson said Santa will attend the school in the village, and there will be other attractions including music.

“There’s music outside, we have a huge nativity scene and we have music set up at a couple of places around the village,” she said.

The show started last year as a fundraiser, and Anderson said over 1,100 people came out. This year they started preparations earlier in the season.

“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers,” Anderson said.

Admission to the event is by donation. This year, the money will contribute to the museum’s summer programs, which includes a heritage camp for kids, and regular community barbecues.
