Somers shines, Ashe red hot in SJHL awards

Nov 29, 2022 | 12:27 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have won five of their last six games, earning points in all of them, which included taking three of a possible four points against the Flin Flon Bombers, this past week.

A huge factor for the Mustangs, against the league’s second-best team, was the play of linemates Zac Somers and Riley Ashe.

SGEU MVP of the Week: In both games this weekend Somers played a big part in Melfort’s offence, finding the back of the net four times and adding two helpers.

The 18-year-old has already doubled his stats from his rookie season as he sits with 14 goals (team-best) and 13 assists, good for 27 points (also team-best), which ranks him inside the top 10 in SJHL scoring.

Direct West Rookie of the Week: Meanwhile, Ashe also played a big part in his club’s offence, racking up three assists in two games.

The 16-year-old now has four goals and 16 assists (team-best) on the season and is second in league-wide scoring among rookies (tied for first in assists).

This was his second time earning this SJHL honour this season.

As for the rest of the organization, they will host a pair of games this weekend, starting on Friday against the Yorkton Terriers, and followed up by the league-leading Battlefords North Stars on Saturday.

The group currently sits third in the Sherwood Division with a 12-8-5-0 record, good for 29 points, and sixth in the SJHL points-wise, but fifth in winning percentage.
