Mustangs’ Minnoch wins D-man of the week

Dec 6, 2022 | 12:09 PM

The Melfort Mustangs scored at least one point in each of their last eight games, which included three of a possible four points, this past weekend at home.

Contributing to a lot of their recent success has been the play, as of late, of 20-year-old Kevin Minnoch.

The veteran blue liner has tallied a point in five of his last six games, including multi-point games in three of his last four contests.

The Sherwood Park, Alta., product, registered a goal and an assist in Melfort’s massive 7-0 win against Yorkton on Friday and then followed it up with a pair of assists in their shootout loss to Battlefords on Saturday.

His four points in two games played earned him the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) SuperU Defenceman of the Week award.

Minnoch now has four goals and 11 assists on the season, which is already a career-high.

The team will head on the road this weekend, as they face the southern Estevan Bruins and Weyburn Red Wings, on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The blue and green currently hold a record of 13-8-5-1 (32 points), good for third in their division and tied for top five in the league.
