Mustangs head south for pair of games, looking to stay confident

Dec 9, 2022 | 9:38 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are headed south this weekend for a pair of games as they look to keep pace with the rest of the SJHL.

The Mustangs have won six of their last eight games, earning points in all eight games, and currently sit in sixth place in the SJHL standings with a 13-8-5-1 record. Last weekend, the Mustangs routed the Yorkton Terriers on Friday and followed it up with a 5-4 shootout loss against Battlefords on Saturday. However, even after the heartbreak against Battlefords, forward Riley Ashe said the team still has lots of confidence.

“We know what we can do,” He said. “We know we’re one of the top teams in this league and we’re ready to do some damage.”

On Friday night, the Mustangs will take on the Estevan Bruins, and will then visit the Weyburn Red Wings on Saturday. It’ll be the last meeting of the season between Estevan and Melfort. Currently, Melfort has won four out of five meetings with the only loss to the Bruins coming in overtime back in October in Melfort.

With the Bruins having made a few moves lately to add to their roster, the team looks a bit different than they did a few weeks ago, but Ashe said that doesn’t change their approach.

“We’ve got to go in there with the same mentality,” Ashe said. “We’ve been on a bit of a run right now, but that can’t change anything.”

Estevan is fourth in the SJHL with 36 points, but they have played three more games than anyone else in the league.

Saturday’s meeting with the Red Wings will be the third meeting of the season. Melfort has won both previous games.

Game time on both nights is 7 p.m. and you can hear all the action on 105 CJVR.
