Fun Filled Weekend

Melfort Daycare putting on Winter Carnival fundraiser

Dec 10, 2022 | 8:00 AM

For the first time ever, the Melfort Daycare Co-operative will be holding a Winter Carnival, in order to fundraise for the improvement of kids’ activities.

This Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate, there will be sled dog rides, snacks and supper, carnival games, a 50/50 raffle and silent auction, a bouncy house, face painting, Santa, and more.

“We knew the sled dogs were always a big hit, but we did want to do something a little bit different as well, so this is the first year that we are doing a carnival theme,” said lead organizer Jessica Watt.

The event will have free admission, however, the already sold-out sled dogs cost $20 a ticket, while supper, which is also available for takeout, will cost $15 a ticket.

All proceeds raised from the festivities will support the daycare and its operational needs.

According to Watt, they’re hoping to use the money for something a little more ‘fun’.

“Every year we have a fundraising goal of $10,000, and that is to help out if we need it with operations. We tried to clear away any of the fundraising dollars from operations and keep them kind of fun and light and be able to help us do improvements with toys or activities for the children.”

The daycare has done two other fundraisers already this year, which included one online, as well as participating in the Show and Shine, selling snack foods.

They are heading into their final fundraiser of the year about halfway to their target, with expectations of exceeding it after this weekend.

“We’re really hoping that lots of families come out and see what we have to offer and hopefully, we can just continue to kind of expand on this. We really appreciate the community support and we’re just hoping that a lot of people come out.”

Watt also added that there is currently a shortage of childcare spaces in Melfort.

“We are doing our best to try and find some solutions to that in the short term, and then we are looking at some next steps coming long term. We’re just kind of excited for the next steps of the daycare and hope that the community will be able to support us along the way as we start taking those next steps to kind of expand our services.”
