City of Melfort tables budget

The City of Melfort has tabled the passing of its 2023 budget, until Dec. 22.

Council originally planned to have it passed Monday night (Dec. 12) after deliberations, however, were unable to do so because of a small clerical error.

Because of this, during December’s council meeting, they had to call a special council meeting, in order to pass the changed version of the proposed budget.

“What we had talked about at the last committee of the whole meeting wasn’t accurately reflected in the document that was presented today, and that’s why we tabled it,” Coun. Trent Mitchell explained.

“There was a discrepancy in the number of given properties that were vacant, and the increased base tax on those properties. It needs to be reflected back into the overall budget number, so that was my concern, it’s more a clerical type error than it is a concern with the budget. We’ll have to take it away, update the documents, and bring it back to the council chambers for approval.”

This means there will be a redistribution of the number ($27,000), so the tax increases are the same, and it’s going to shift some to the base tax and come out of the mill rate.

This will create a minor adjustment to the mill rate factor based on the base tax increase.

“Overall, the mill rate factor being adjusted by you know a little bit will drop that property tax somewhat,” Mitchell added. “It’s the vacant properties that will be assessed a higher rate on the bass tax increase.”

Council seemed to agree to the rest of the budget, which would officially cement a 6.6 per cent municipal property tax increase.

This would place the 2023 operating budget at roughly $11.2 million.

“I don’t foresee any changes, however, we are being cautious, just in case,” Chief Financial Officer Trevor Wowk, in a final statement to northeastNOW.
