It was a dominant month for northeast teams in the SJHL and on New Year’s Day, the league took notice.

The SJHL unveiled its Players of the month for December with two members of the Mustangs and a Bronco player getting the top honours.

For Humboldt, it was Benjamin Motew winning the Sasktel Goalie of the Month honours.

The 18-year-old goaltender allowed just five goals in four games and recorded his first SJHL shutout against the Weyburn Red Wings on Dec. 17th. He finished the month with a 3-1 record and has an 8-2-0-1 record this season and ranks eighth in the league with a 2.70 GAA.

The Directwest Rookie of the Month went to Melfort’s David Rioux.

Rioux registered five goals and three assists in seven games played, doubling his point total on the year and boasting seven goals and nine assists going into January. Rioux is also tied for seventh in rookie scoring league-wide.

Finally, the SuperU Defenceman of the Month award went to Kevin Minnoch of the Melfort Mustangs.

The 20-year-old defenceman scored four goals and added eight assists in December, highlighted by a four-point night on Dec 14th against the Melville Millionaires.

Minnoch now has seven goals and 16 assists on the year and is eighth in SJHL scoring among defencemen.
