Prarie North Co-op reflects on a year of giving back

Jan 6, 2023 | 12:00 PM

Prairie North Co-op is reflecting on a year of giving back to the community, but also looking forward to what they can do in the year ahead.

Marketing manager Terri Larsen told NortheastNOW they received over 450 requests last year for support from members of the community.

“That works out to about 1.25 requests per day and not just a 5-day work week,” Larsen said.

Although the final numbers for the amount Prairie North Co-op donated over the year haven’t come in yet, it is more than $20,000 over budget.

“Our community investment strategy sees 0.01% of gross sales committed to making our communities better places and/or improving the quality of life for our employees, members and customers,” Larsen continued. “As a co-operative built on giving back, it is very difficult to say no to worthy projects that align with our values.

Thanks to the community investment strategy by shopping local not only is your money helping to support local co-ops, but it’s also supporting community growth.

“Shopping local means more business at the community level, which translates to jobs. The big box stores and online retailers can’t say that.”

Larsen explained that due to continued support from the service area, the Sustainable Community Fund has an allocation of $25,000 for more substantial projects in the Northeast.

“These are the projects that have the ability to positively impact hundreds of people.”

A few of the major highlights of the year was the ability to respond and offer support to the situation at James Smith Cree Nation.

“Within days of the news breaking we were able to donate $10,000 to help the families impacted by the tragedy.”

Prairie North Co-op is proud of its ability to share its profits with members, protect the environment, source local for operations and build stronger communities.
