Mustangs give up late goals in loss to Hawks
The Melfort Mustangs dominated the first half or so of their Jan. 6 game against the Nipawin Hawks, but 30 minutes wasn’t enough as the Mustangs fell 2-1 to their rivals at the Northern Lights Palace.
Melfort outshot the Hawks 16-6 through one period, including a 15-0 stretch to begin the game, but they were unable to beat Jackson Fellner who stood tall for Nipawin in net. The Mustangs would finally get on the board in the second as Leyton Holoien scored a powerplay marker just three minutes in.
Although, as the second period progressed, the Hawks seemed to get their legs going and started to dictate. In the third, Braxton Buckberger tied the game with just over seven minutes to play and things were set up for a wild finish.
Boston Maxwell took a four-minute slew footing penalty with five minutes left in the game, putting Melfort into defend mode for the final few minutes. Zander Stewart would put one passed Joel Favreau for the Hawks to give them the late lead, and they would hold on for their second victory on the season against Melfort.
