Mustangs execute trade deadline deal with Klippers

Jan 10, 2023 | 3:04 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have committed to a player swap with the Kindersley Klippers, just ahead of the 2023 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) trade deadline (Jan. 10).

The deal was announced by the teams late yesterday (Monday), as Alex Mack has been sent down south, which in return, will see Wyatt Cook come to the northeast.

For Cook, a 2003-born forward, this will be his third SJHL team and fourth junior team overall, this season.

Before playing seven games in Kindersley, scoring a goal and an assist, he spent 16 games with the Flin Flon Bombers, where he added five goals and an assist.

Prior to that, the 6-2 209-pound forward also played four games with the Bonnyville Pontiacs in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), notching one helper.

“We are excited to add Wyatt to our forward group,” said Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins. “He is a complete player and has a good skill set with his size and strength. His experience will be a great asset now and in the playoffs.”

The Cold Lake, Alta. product also played 10 games for the Pontiacs in the 2020-2021 season, posting five assists.

Meanwhile, 2004-born forward Mack joined the Mustangs back in October and has since played in 17 games, scoring two points.

The Edmonton, Alta. product was originally acquired from the Drayton Valley Thunder of the AJHL, in exchange for a player development fee.

In three early games with them this year, he was held off the scoresheet.

“We would like to thank Alex for his time as a Mustang and wish him the best in Kindersley,” Blevins added. “We’d also like to welcome Wyatt and his family to Melfort.”
