Hawks meet Klippers in Rosetown; Robbie returns to roots

Jan 21, 2023 | 11:36 AM

The Nipawin Hawks will play their second neutral site game of the week Saturday when they clash with Kindersley in Rosetown.

The Hawks are one of the hottest teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) right now with wins in four straight games including three of those away from the Centennial Arena. The Hawks have evened their record away from the ‘Cage’ on the season and are confident going into any rink. Third-year Nipawin defenseman Eric Robbie is from Rosetown, he will return to the lineup after missing seven weeks with an injury. He said getting back into the lineup with a streaking team is perfect.

“To finally get back in and join this team that’s hot right now, what better way to come back in?” Robbie said after getting cleared to play.

The Hawks were in Wadena on Tuesday to meet Yorkton and won that game 3-2. The win was their fourth on the road in the 2023 calendar year. Heading into meeting four of six with the Klippers and lost away from home in the season series, Robbie said playing the Klippers in his hometown will be a night he’ll remember forever.

“I would have never thought growing up that I was going to play a junior game in my hometown,” Robbie said. “When I saw it in the summer or whenever the schedule came out and there was a game in Rosetown I have had my eyes on it since.”

Almost 500 people attended the Hawks-Terriers matchup in Wadena, Robbie said the town is buzzing about Saturday’s contest as well. He said he knows who the favourites will be, but he hopes the Hawks are the last team standing at the end.

“The town is ready to go, I don’t think they have picked sides yet even. It’s been advertised on Facebook and around the high school for this bout. As long as the town is cheering for the Nipawin Hawks at the end of the game, that’s all I can ask for,” Robbie concluded.

The game will be broadcast on 750 Beach Radio beginning with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m., face-off is 7:30 p.m.
