Inconsistency continues to plague Mustangs in shootout loss to Terriers

Less than 24 hours after a dominating 7-1 win over the Notre Dame Hounds in Melfort, the Mustangs fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday night in Yorkton.

The Mustangs got out to a blazing start as Leyton Holoien scored just 39 seconds into the hockey game. However, Brett Butz would respond for Yorkton two minutes later to tie up the game.

Later in the frame, Clay Sleeva drove to the Mustangs net, colliding heavily with Mustangs netminder Joel Favreau. Sleeve would get five and a game for Goaltender interference, and Favreau would finish the period.

He was then replaced by James Venne in the Melfort net to start the second period.

Both teams would get some quality chances through the second period, and early third, but had nothing to show for it as both goalies stood tall. Although the second period would favour the Terriers who outshot the Mustangs 14-5 in the period.

In the third, it was back and forth action, but Tysen Smith for Yorkton and Venne for Melfort continued to stand tall. That was until Dylan Ruptash caught a Mustangs turnover and roofed one by Venne for Yorkton’s first lead of the night. But, with just under 10 minutes to go, the Mustangs earned a powerplay and would get a powerplay marker from Kevin Minnoch to tie the game.

Each team had their chances to end it in regulation but couldn’t get one to go. The same can be said for overtime where the Terriers outshot the Mustangs 4-2.

In the shootout, Leyton Holoien, Dawson Leroux, and Riley Ashe were unable to solve Smith, while Maddux Nollski was able to put one by Venne for the game winner.

The Mustangs are back in action on Tuesday when the host Flin Flon.
