The Melfort Mustangs continue to build their roster for next year with another commitment to the club.

The team announced that 2005-born forward Austin Shepherd has committed for the 2023-24 season.

Shepherd marks the third Melfort commitment in the past week, joining Luc Fortier and Edward Knittig.

What all three have in common is that they’ve suited up for the blue and green at least once this year.

Shepherd, who’s been an affiliate player a couple of times, had his recent stint with the group this past weekend against the Terriers in Yorkton.

“Austin brings a work ethic that is off the charts,” Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said. “His energy and compete level is a great fit for how we want to play.”

The Kerrobert, Sask. product, is currently a member of the Battleford U18 AAA Stars.

Through 31 games this year, he is second on the team in goals and points, with 11 and 21 respectively, while adding 10 helpers.

Prior to his time with the Stars, the 5-8, 155-lbs forward played two seasons of U18 AA with the West Central Wheat Kings. In 46 career games, he scored 22 times and added 35 assists.
