Mustangs looking to exorcise road demons, host Humboldt Saturday

Jan 27, 2023 | 8:01 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are set for a pair of games this weekend as they look to rise up the SJHL standings.

Melfort will visit the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday night and look to work through some struggles on the road as of late.

Since Christmas, the Mustangs are just 1-2-0-1 away from home and forward Dawson Leroux said they just need to work through it and get back to basics.

“It might just be in our heads a bit honestly,” he said. “Just have a good start and maybe simplify things on the road.”

Leroux and the Mustangs are coming off a Tuesday night win over Flin Flon at the Palace, a big win as the Mustangs look for home-ice advantage in round one of the playoffs.

Melfort is currently 21-12-5-2, tied for fifth place with 49 points. They sit just five points back of second place La Ronge and four points back of third place Humboldt, who is the Mustangs’ opponent on Saturday in Melfort.

While most would be highlighting the rivalry game that’s set for Saturday, Leroux said every game at this point in the season is exciting.

“Everyone’s pretty close in the standings where we’re at,” he said. “So, we’ve got a big one Friday, we’ve got to win that, and then another big one Saturday against Humboldt.”

Melfort has won all three meetings with Weyburn this season, while against Humboldt, the Mustangs have won two of five meetings this year.

Weyburn currently has a four-point cushion on the eighth and final playoff spot in the league.

Game time on Friday in Weyburn is 7 p.m. and you can catch the game on 105 CJVR. Saturday night’s game will be a 7:30 puck drop at the Palace.
