Huxley, Venne shine in Mustangs win over Broncos

Jan 29, 2023 | 12:10 PM

Make it three wins in a row for the Melfort Mustangs after their 4-1 win over the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort was outshot 18-11 in the first period, but goals from Ben Tkachuk, Clarke Huxley, Zac Somers gave the Mustangs the early 3-0 lead.

Humboldt got one back in the second, courtesy of Lucas Ceccarelli, but the Mustangs were still in control.

Huxley’s second of the night in the third period gave him his first multi-goal game since the 2022 SJHL Playoffs. He earned three points on the evening and said it was nice to contribute, but the two points are most important.

“Not the focus to score goals,” Huxley said. “Focus is winning games, but it’s good to chip in on the scoresheet.”

The win puts Melfort at a 23-12-5-2 record on the year, good for fifth place and 53 points, just two points back of Humboldt for third place and five back of La Ronge for second. Huxley added that the win on Saturday was big in the grand scheme of things.

“Huge, every win is huge now,” he said. “You look at the standings, you win one you go up, you lose one you drop, so these points are important at this time of year.”

Melfort will have a week off as a team before heading west for a road trip to Battlefords and Kindersley. Although, it won’t be a break for everyone in the blue and green as 10 Mustangs are headed to Winnipeg this week for the SJHL/MJHL Showcase.
