Snowmobile riders from around the province will be gathering in Hudson Bay on Saturday.

It’s the annual Hudson Bay Trail Riders Snowmobile Rally.

“There’s two trails, one is 100 miles, and is 80 miles,” said Trail Riders president Clayton Sheptak. “We had people calling from Manitoba…that they will come, people from Swift Current, people from Saskatoon.”

He said upwards of 150 riders are expected for the event, which starts in the morning and ends with a dinner and dance in the evening.

It’s a fundraiser to help the Hudson Bay club pay for expenses, and the evening events are being billed as Valentine’s dinner and dance.

The club maintains 682 kilometers of snowmobile trails in the region, and it is not a small undertaking.

“It’s for our skidoo club, so we can keep maintaining our trails, our groomers and stuff like that,” he said. “Our trail system is awesome here, it’s phenomenal…our trails are second to none. And we usually have lots of snow, and this year we have a ton of snow.”

He said many of the trails are along tree-lined routes in the boreal forest that surrounds Hudson Bay.

“That’s why people love coming here to ride them,” he added.

Sheptak explained many of the trails are north of the community in the Wildcat Hills, but there are also trails that join up with other snowmobile trail systems, such as trails out of Carrot River, Porcupine Plain, and Arborfield, among others.

Events like the Hudson Bay rally are one-way clubs around the province raise money to keep their trails going, he said.

“There’s four rallies going on tomorrow (Saturday),” said Sheptak, with more coming up later in the season.
