Exercising Demons

Mustangs earn hard fought win in Yorkton

Feb 11, 2023 | 9:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs hope to have exercised some demons after a 4-2 win over the Yorkton Terriers at Westland Arena in Yorkton on Friday night.

The win breaks a mini two-game losing streak for the Mustangs and it was pretty close to a full 60-minute effort, something the Mustangs have lacked on the road at times as of late.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said they wanted to try and keep it simple for this game.

“Let’s get to the red line, put it deep, take some body, put more pucks to the net,” he said. “I think everybody did that.”

The Mustangs felt in control of the game from puck drop most of the night, but they did give up the first goal of the game just over halfway through the first period as Cade Kennedy put the Terriers up one. However, Wyatt Cook would respond for the Mustangs late in the period to keep it tied after 20 minutes.

Cam Emigh and Ryan Duguay would add goals in the second for the Melfort Mustangs to give them a lead heading into the third period.

Yorkton would get one back halfway through the third as Brett Butz made it 3-2. Melfort would add the final dagger with about six minutes to play in the game as a Leith Olafson slapshot made it 4-2.

Meyers added that he’d like to see a few things cleaned up, but all in all it was a solid performance for the Mustangs.

“Clean it up a little bit more in the defensive zone and picking guys up,” Meyers said.

James Venne stopped 24 of 26 in the win for Melfort.

The Mustangs will now host the Terriers on Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace.
