Hawks snap losing streak on back on Fellner

The Nipawin Hawks snapped their five-game losing streak Saturday in Weyburn with a 2-0 victory over the Red Wings.

Leading the charge was Hawks’ netminder Jackson Fellner, the former Weyburn puck stopper turned aside all 34 shots he faced to earn his second career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) shutout in what he called the “biggest game of his life” earlier in the afternoon.

“It feels so good, as soon as there was five seconds on the clock and we were up 2-0, goosebumps all over my body. I looked up at my family, they were more excited than me it looked like. It’s a big one for the guys,” he said after the game.

Fellner’s shutout didn’t come without a few fortunate bounces through out the game including the Red Wings hitting the post in the dying seconds of the first period.

“They were close and we kind of got lucky at the end of the first, but yeah we have to play whistle to whistle, buzzer to buzzer,” Fellner added.

Braxton Buckberger scored the game winning goal with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, the 19-year-old Saskatoon product has 20 goals on the year. Carson Dobson secured the win throwing his 15^th goal of the season into an empty net as Weyburn pulled Dazza Mitchell for an extra attacker.

The Hawks had 27 shots on goal in the win, each team had two power-plays, neither scored with the advantage.

The game wrapped up a three game road trip for the Hawks that the team picked up three points. In Friday’s game the team lost both Joel Mabin and Rylan Lefebvre to injuries. Fellner said the team was soaking in the emotional win and will now get set to host Kindersley Tuesday.

“Getting this win, it was a four-point game tonight,” he said. “It’s good to reset, get back in the win column for the boys, yeah, just happy.”

With the win Nipawin returned home from the road trip that started Thursday in Notre Dame with a five point lead over Weyburn for seventh in the SJHL standings, The Hawks are four points behind Estevan for sixth with 10 games remaining.

Tuesday’s game versus the Klippers begins at 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
