Mustangs sweep weekend set with Terriers

Feb 12, 2023 | 9:23 AM

The Melfort Mustangs earned a 2-1 win over the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace, less than 24 hours after defeating the Terriers on their home ice 4-2.

Much like it was on Friday, the Terriers opened the scoring as Clay Sleeva’s 11th gave the Terriers the lead. That was until midway through the second period where the Mustangs started to dominate a bit more than they did in the first.

Wyatt Cook’s 10th of the season tied the game, and then 30 seconds after that, Aidyn Hutchinson’s eighth of the season gave Melfort the lead, and it was ultimately the game-winning goal.

It was a game that was similar to Friday, a grind-it-out affair, with both teams getting chances, but neither team being able to pull ahead. Hutchinson said they were able to keep it simple on Saturday night.

“They’re a big team, just got to get the puck deep and work them down low,” he said. “And that’s what I think we did tonight and it gave us success.”

Melfort only allowed three goals on the weekend, and after a weekend that saw them allow 11 over two games, Hutchinson said they buckled things down defensively this weekend.

“Just playing the system, everyone knew what they were doing out there,” Hutchinson said. “And we got pucks out.”

Melfort now improves to 25-14-5-2 and will host the Kindersley Klippers on Wednesday.
