Fouillards Cup Game Three

Minnoch, Somers score twice in Mustangs win over Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs have earned a win in the Fouillards Cup after a 6-2 win over the Kindersley Klippers on Wednesday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

The Fouillards Cup now sits at a 2-1 lead for the Klippers and the series will conclude on March 1 back at the Palace.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the hockey game, courtesy of Kevin Minnoch. Kindersley would respond just about eight minutes into the game to tie it up, which is how it would stand after one period.

The goal for Minnoch was his first of two on the night and he said, while they were able to score first, it was a slow start for their team. They were even outshot 15-9 in the first period.

“I think after the first ten minutes we were rolling,” Minnoch said. “So, it all came together.”

Zac Somers scored less than a minute into the second period, while Minnoch’s second of the night came just a couple minutes later before Kindersley made it 3-2, but that’s as close as the Klippers would get.

Ben Tkachuk’s 10th of the year would make it 4-2 in the second, while Somers and Riley Ashe added markers in the third to make it 6-2.

The Wednesday win was the Mustangs first over the last-place Klippers this season and Minnoch said it was big in the grand scheme of things.

“At the end of the year like this, you’ve got to beat the teams below you in the standings,” he said. “So yeah it’s big.”

It wasn’t just the Mustangs’ first win over the Klippers, but Frank Fazio earned his first coaching win in the SJHL as he was covering for Dan Meyers.

Melfort won’t have much time to rest as they’re back on the ice on Friday. They’ll open a home and home with the Melville Millionaires. The Mustangs are now 26-14-5-2 on the year and are just four points back of second place.
