Melfort parents and families come together to support the 2SLGBTQ+

Feb 24, 2023 | 11:48 AM

Melfort parents and families are coming together to discuss the triumphs and pitfalls of supporting 2SLGBTQ+ youth in the community.

With the first coffee and conversation meeting coming up, all parents of 2SLGBTQ+ youth in the Northeast are invited to come for an afternoon of support.

Co-founder of Melfort Parents & Families of 2SLGBTQ+ Shawna Gray told northeastNOW that although they haven’t had their first meeting yet they have high hopes for the future.

“What we’re imagining is that it’s going to be a place of support for parents to come to and talk about any struggles or challenges that they have as parents of kids who are 2SLGBTQ+.”

The goal of the group is to create a safe space for parents to come together and support one another, their children and the broader community.

As a mental health professional, Gray wanted to start the group as a way to open the door for those who want to make connections and ask questions in a safe space.

“We don’t even know as parents what we need yet. So it’s going to be coming together and brainstorming what this coffee group is going to be about.”

The first meeting will cover topics such as ways to work on inclusivity in the Northeast.

“There isn’t even a gay-straight alliance yet at Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC),” Gray continues. “I think that kids use are finding their own way to support themselves, but I don’t know that parents feel that they’re getting that support themselves.”

As for S2LGBTQ+ support in the community, this past year there has been an uptick in stores with pride flags displayed. This is in addition to Melfort hosting its first pride walk last year.

The first Melfort Parents & Families of 2SLGBTQ+ meeting will be held at the North East Outreach & Support Services Administration Building at 124 McKendry Ave W in Melfort on March 5 at 3:00 p.m.
