Mustangs drop crucial two points to Ice Wolves

Feb 25, 2023 | 9:05 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are now three points back of the fourth-place La Ronge Ice Wolves after falling 4-2 to their Sherwood Division rivals last night at the Palace.

Heading into the game that featured a possible playoff matchup, Melfort was just one point back of the Ice Wolves with two games in hand, and while they still hold a pair of games in hand, the hill becomes that much bigger to climb.

Forward Clarke Huxley scored in the contest and said while there were some positives, they need the wins right now.

“We didn’t play our game like we wanted to,” he said. “Thought we had some good stretches but some bad, and that’s not good enough at this point. Coming down the stretch, if you take a few minutes off, it’s not good enough to get it done.”

Huxley’s goal came five minutes into the first period, where the Mustangs seemed to be on the right track, outshooting the Ice Wolves 13-2 at one point. However, Thomas Wright and Ethan Strik answered for La Ronge before 20 minutes had expired.

Strik added one more in the second, while Jacob Visentini added one in the third to make it 4-1 before Aidyn Hutchin tried to start the Mustangs comeback with the 4-2 goal with just under three minutes to play.

Melfort fired 41 shots at Topher Chirico in the Ice Wolves net in the loss.

Huxley added that they played an ok game, but results matter at this point in the season.

“Tough to not get the result you want, but if you lose, it’s not good enough, so we’ve got to find a way to get two points, can’t drop another one tomorrow.”

Melfort will visit the Ice Wolves on Saturday to wrap up the home and home set.
