Online learning services to improve in northeast

Feb 27, 2023 | 3:14 PM

The Town of Nipawin will soon be the site for one of the nine additional regional campuses established across the province, later this fall, by the Saskatchewan Distance Learning Corporation (Sask DLC).

This will give students accessing courses online the opportunity to connect and receive instruction from local teachers at the locations, in addition to connecting virtually.

“This initiative is really about taking all that good work that’s happening at each of the online schools across the province and the different public school divisions and bringing them together into one organization,” Darren Gasper, CEO of Sask DLC, said.

Teachers will run classes from the main Sask DLC office (Kenaston) or from the regional campuses and work collaboratively to provide high-quality education to all students, who will have the ability to attend on a full-time or part-time basis.

The program will provide education all the way from kindergarten to the Grade 12 level.

“The need to have that local context and local connection was there, so we wanted to make sure that we had that good regional coverage,” Gasper added. “With Nipawin, it covers that nice northeast corner of the province and just ensures we’ve got that strong connection with each of the schools and the students in those areas.”

Kids also won’t be missing out on all the added benefits of going to school, such as recognition, and added social situations and learning opportunities.

This will include over 100 different high school electives, as well as driver’s licence training, graduation ceremonies and extra-curricular activities, including arts and sports.

“A really nice broad selection for students to find an area that they’re passionate about,” Gasper told northeastNOW.

Students will register with the new school and then be connected to their local school division, which will provide tuition to the Sask DLC.

Student registration for the new provincial online school will be available in April.

“We’re looking to have that genuine, authentic partnership with school divisions and all of the schools across it,” Gasper said. “Really being a good support person, not only in all of those programming opportunities but just a strong working connection for students, as well.”

Everything will be open and available come the 2023/24 school year.

Adult students wishing to complete their Grade 12 year or take additional electives will be able to do so at the Sask DLC as well.
