Melfort Chamber to host crime prevention presentation

Feb 28, 2023 | 1:18 PM

The Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce (MTACC) is set to host a crime prevention presentation, next Wednesday, March 8.

The MTACC Chamber Chat Speaker Series will be doing so, in conjunction with the Melfort RCMP.

“It was one of those things where I would pop into businesses and talk to them about how it’s going and the topic of crime crept up on us,” explained MTACC executive director, Cal Gratton. “We started talking about the influx of crime in the city, and it was just one of those things that just kind of blossomed from conversations I had with businesses.”

Crime has been a recent topic of discussion around Melfort, so much so that the city staff are involved to try and fix the issue.

While Gratton told northeastNOW the presentation was actually scheduled prior to the meeting between them, the city, and the police, the timing really worked out for the better.

“I think that it is perfect timing completely by accident, but there are a lot of businesses talking about crime prevention and the fact that there is stuff going on in the city. So really, if there ever was a perfect time to talk about crime prevention, it certainly would be now.”

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Canalta Hotel in Melfort, with a short question and answer period to follow.

Gratton added the way it’s set up will really give the local business community the opportunity to tell their story and have their voices heard.

“I think a lot of the businesses are looking forward to that portion of the evening because although in broad strokes, it’s the same sort of thing, each business is different in how they have crime going on in their business, and how they handle crime. I think that the business owners will just be looking for ideas from the guest speakers as to how to prevent that, or at least to slow it down.”

The MTACC is expecting roughly 30-35 attendees, with limited spots available. Cost is $10 for MTACC members and $15 for non-members.

Pre-registration is required by March 1, with tickets also available at the door or by e-transfer, which can be sent to trademelfort@melfort.ca.

Cheesecake will be served courtesy of RJ’s Urban Garden Café. Coffee, water and tea are served courtesy of Canalta Melfort.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Darren Simons and Constable Elliott Boissonneau will be the speakers.
