Zoning approved for new Humboldt liquor store

Humboldt city council has approved the Humboldt Co-Op’s plan to build a stand alone liquor store in that city.

City council approved the discretionary zoning for the store at its Monday meeting. It comes after the city posted the plan on its website, consulted with nearby businesses, and held a public hearing during the council meeting.

There were no submissions against the proposed store.

“The proposed development does meet all the relevant provisions of the zoning bylaw,” said Mike Kwasnica, director of protective services, told council, “including parking requirements, signage and landscaping, and the proposal is unlikely to have any negative effects on the surrounding land uses.”

In its submission to the city, Co-Op said it is planning a 4,400 square foot store at 2435 Westwood Drive.

The moves comes after the Co-Op purchased a Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming ‘Off-Sale’ Retail Store Permit (RSP) from the Pioneer Hotel last year.

According to the company, conversations with the Pioneer Hotel began in August of 2022, and the deal was finalized in December.

Humboldt Co-Op’s plan is to start construction of the new building this spring, and have the store open before the end of 2023.

There is already a Sobey’s Liquor Store in Humboldt. In addition to that, the permit from the provincial liquor store in Humboldt recently sold at auction for $720,000, with 19 bidders, according to an SLGA spokesperson. So far, names of successful bidders have not been released.
