Porcupine Plain to play in Provincial C Final

Mar 2, 2023 | 5:19 PM

The Porcupine Plain Senior Blues hockey team will welcome the Eston Ramblers to town this weekend, for game one of the Provincial ‘C’ Northern Final.

The Blues earned that right, this past weekend when they travelled down to Dinsmore to face the defending champion Dynamos.

“We’re not gonna put too much pressure on ourselves, we know we’re going to be the underdog with whoever we play left in provincials,” said head coach Duuae Thorpe. “Nobody’s given us any satisfaction of beating anybody in this league and playing the defending champion off the bat shows what we got to do to beat any of these other teams.”

And after Porcupine Plain lost game 1 of their semi-final series, that forced them to have to win both games 2 and 3 on the road.

But against all odds (only 13.9% of fans picked them to win in a bracket challenge), they got it done and will now look to do the same.

“We just went there and kept it simple and played smart and rugged greedy hockey, actually playoff-style hockey,” Thorpe explained. “When you get some of those teams closer to the city, they don’t like playing the rougher style of hockey, so we kept it very simple, we got the puck in deep and got lots of shots and we came on top. I think we shocked them actually.”

The Blues are comprised of anywhere from 12-14 players, as they only have an allowed combined community population capacity of 3,500.

This gives them the opportunity to pull a player or two from places like Hudson Bay and Foam Lake.

Puck drop will go at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 3 at the Chase Place Arena in Porcupine Plain. Games two and three (if necessary) will go at 7 and 3, next Saturday and Sunday respectively, in Eston.

Friday’s home game will have a guaranteed $2,000 50/50, sponsored by Express Seed Cleaning.

“The game is gonna be huge for the town,” Thorpe added. “There’s been a buzz all week about the game since we won, it was kind of a shocker for most people. I figure there’s gonna be lots of people showing up and it will be packed. Hopefully, we get lots of support out there and people will cheer us on.”
