Lackluster Loss

Mustangs defeated by Ice Wolves in final regular season meeting

Mar 4, 2023 | 9:01 AM

It certainly had the feel of a playoff game, but the score dictated otherwise on Friday night as the La Ronge Ice Wolves defeated the Melfort Mustangs by a 6-1 score to wrap up their season series.

The two are almost guaranteed to meet in the first round of the playoffs, and it certainly had that energy as the teams gathered a combined 109 minutes of penalties in the contest, including six-ten minute misconducts.

However, on the scoreboard, it was all Ice Wolves most of the night. Ryan Silzer opened the scoring for La Ronge, in the first, and Melfort would tie the game early in the second thanks to Hayden Tuba, but after that, the Ice Wolves slowly ran away with things.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said the score maybe didn’t dictate the way the Mustangs, played at times, but ultimately it didn’t matter.

“They did outplay us though,” he said. “That’s the bottom line.”

Jacob Cossette, Kale Taylor, and Parker Layton scored in the second for the Ice Wolves to make it 4-1, and Ethan Strik added 2 more in the third for the nails in the Mustangs coffin.

Meyers added that they need to be more physical, especially at this point in the season.

“That’s one of the main things we’re trying to throw at every team, is more physicality,” Meyers said. “But we didn’t bring that.”

A big deciding factor as well in the game was powerplay success as the Mustangs went just 1-for-5, while the Ice Wolves capitalized to the tune of a 3-for-7 night.

The Mustangs now have just three games remaining on their schedule, including Sunday afternoon against Nipawin where admission is free. Puck drop is 3 p.m..
