Mustangs still hold cards for home ice advantage with two games left

Mar 7, 2023 | 10:02 AM

The Melfort Mustangs will be on the road for their final two games of the SJHL regular season.

It all begins on Tuesday when the Mustangs visit the Whitney Forum to take on the Flin Flon Bombers. Forward Clarke Huxley said they’ll have to be on their game when playing the Sherwood Division leading Bombers.

“Flin Flons always a tough team to play against,” Huxley said. “They’re physical and stingy defensively so we know going in we’ll have to simplify our game.”

Flin Flon is currently second in the league and has already clinched the Sherwood Division, but are currently battling with the Humboldt Broncos for second place in the SJHL standings.

For the Mustangs, they know exactly who they are going to play in the first round as they’ll meet the La Ronge Ice Wolves in what is sure to be an exciting series. The only thing left to decide is who’s going to hold home ice advantage in the matchup. The teams are tied in points, each with two games to play, so essentially, whoever earns more points in their final two games will host the first two games on the first round next weekend.

Huxley said it may not be a bad thing being in a position where the games still mean a ton.

“I think we definitely look at our situation as a good thing, you always want to be in control of your own fate,” he said. “And at this point of the year it’s good to get into that must win game mentality going into playoffs.”

As for Tuesday’s matchup with Flin Flon, it’ll be the sixth and final matchup between the Sherwood Division rivals with Flin Flon holding a 3-2 lead in the series. Four of the five contests have been decided by two goals or less, with one of the games going to overtime.
