Mustangs set to close out regular season against Hawks

Mar 10, 2023 | 9:36 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have just one game remaining in their SJHL regular season and it all goes down on Friday night.

The Mustangs will visit the Nipawin Hawks and both teams still have a few things to be decided before the puck drops for the playoffs next weekend. For Nipawin, they’re battling for sixth place and the right to either face Humboldt or Flin Flon in round one.

Things are a bit simpler for the Mustangs as they already know their first round opponent will be the La Ronge Ice Wolves, but they still don’t know who will have home ice advantage. A Mustangs win Friday would put the pressure on La Ronge, who faces Flin Flon in a home and home this weekend. Melfort would be four points ahead of La Ronge with a victory, meaning that a loss of any sort by the Ice Wolves give the Mustangs home ice.

Mustangs forward Dawson Leroux says they know what’s at stake, but they really just want to be playing well heading into playoff time.

“That doesn’t matter too much in the grand scheme of things,” Leroux said. “But it would definitely be nice to pick up two points on the last game of the season.”

Nipawin has won three of the five contest against the Mustangs, with the most recent being on Sunday where the Hawks won in overtime in what was an exciting game in front of a packed house in Melfort.

Three of the five games have been one goal affairs and Leroux said it’s a rivalry that never fails to be exciting.

“They’ve definitely gave us some good battles, and it’s been fun,” he said.

Game time on Friday night is 7 p.m. in Nipawin and you can catch all the action on 105 CJVR.
