Hometown boy sends Melfort home happy as Mustangs tie series with Ice Wolves

The hometown kid had his moment on Saturday night in Melfort as the Mustangs beat the La Ronge Ice Wolves 3-2 to tie their round one series at one game a piece.

Zac Somers scored the overtime winner, just over a minute into overtime to help the Mustangs complete the comeback over La Ronge after being down 2-0 heading into the third period. While the score was in favour of La Ronge through two frames, the Mustangs were probably the better team most of the night, outshooting the Wolves 32-22 in the game, and even 19-12 through two period.

“That shows exactly what our group is,” Somers said. “We know we don’t give up. Outshooting them, out chanced them, we deserved a better fate early in that game, but we stuck with it and obviously we got rewarded for our work.”

Thomas Wright and Connor Abric scored for La Ronge to take the early lead, while the response in the third period came on goals from Clarke Huxley and Ben Tkachuk.

Somers said they were excited to play, and win in front of the 1,200-plus Melfort and La Ronge fans on Saturday, knowing it’s going to be a similar atmosphere in La Ronge on Tuesday and Wednesday for games three and four.

“Going into La Ronge on Tuesday, we should have the confidence to hopefully pull two out up there,” he said.

With the series tied at one, things have now turned into a best-of-five.
