The North East SPCA (NESPCA) have clawed their way back to success.

After a difficult year in 2022, the organization has a lot to look forward to after battling to keep the doors open.

Bill Wood works in Communications for NESPCA and told northeastNOW that things are looking up despite the hard year.

“We’re climbing the business out of that period. There’s a little bit of light there, but 2022 was really tough and I thank the people that hung by us during the tough times.”

The NESPCA faced a volunteer drop due to COVID-19, which caused the business to suffer, but there were also financial troubles.

“We had a finance meeting every week just to make sure that we could do better,” Wood said.

The transition from running week to week just to ensure the doors could stay open to now having a steady volunteer base was the first sign things were coming around.

Thanks to community support the shelter was able to take in 207 animals: 166 cats, and 41 dogs. Nearly all the animals have since found forever homes.

Wood explained that the shelter expects their intake to continue to rise.

“We have opened up agreements with Melfort and Nipawin and we’re now working on agreements with Tisdale and other surrounding areas.”

The shelter is also looking forward to more fundraising opportunities this year since this is the first year with a steady group of volunteers and board members since the pandemic began.

Despite a stable volunteer base, NESPCA is always looking to add additional volunteers and is accepting applications on its website.

Meanwhile, they’re holding their annual general meeting on Mar. 28 at 7:00 p.m. which will include a financial overview of the year and what can be expected for 2024.
