Best of Three

Favreau stars for Mustangs in game four road win

The first-round series between the Melfort Mustang and La Ronge Ice Wolves has turned into a best-of-three after a 3-1 Mustangs win on Wednesday night to tie at two games a piece.

It was another contest at the JRMCC in Air Ronge after ice issues rendered the Mel Hegland Uniplex unsuitable for hockey, and it was another exciting affair with both teams finding chances. Overall though, Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said it was a pretty complete effort from his group.

“Trying to just keep it simple,” Meyers said. “If there’s nothing there, throw it deep and go take somebody and just throw pucks on net.”

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first period on a Hayden Tuba shot that looked to be tipped by Boston Maxwell. The Mustangs held the 1-0 lead until early in the third period as Trenton Curtis bit his former team again with his second goal of the series to tie the game 1-1.

Then, with just a few minutes to play, Cam Emigh’s first of the playoffs gave Melfort the 2-1 lead, a lead they would grip onto for dear life. Aidyn Hutchinson added an empty netter to make it a 3-1 final.

Joel Favreau was tremendous for Melfort stopping 29 of 30 shots, including a few massive stops to keep things tied or Melfort ahead, including a penalty shot in the third period.

“Unbelievable,” said Meyers. “He’s the reason we won, to be honest.”

Melfort’s penalty kill was also a perfect five-for-five in the win.

Game five goes on Friday in Melfort.
