Mar 28, 2023 | 9:45 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have announced that their starting goalie has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for the 2023/24 season.

Joel Favreau, a 2002-born goaltender will suit up for the SUNY-Geneseo Ice Knights, following the end of his SJHL career.

The Ice Knights play out of Geneseo, New York, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

“I am super excited for the opportunity to attend a great school and join a winning culture at the next level,” Favreau said. “I want to thank all my teammates, coaches, friends, and family for supporting me to get to this point in my career.”

The Prince Albert product is currently in his third season with the blue and green, after joining the club for the 2020/21 COVID-shortened season.

In 29 regular season games this year, Favreau sported a 14-6-4-1 record, to go along with a 2.56 goals-against-average, a .913 save percentage, and three shutouts.

Meanwhile, during the 2021/2022 season, Favreau was 14-7-2-1 with a 2.74 goals-against-average, and a .902 save percentage, as well as one shutout.

He also played in two games as a rookie during the shortened 2020/2021 season and was 1-1, only allowing three goals on 54 shots.

Favreau’s 70 games played across the regular season and playoffs are currently tenth all-time in Mustangs history among goalies.

The netminder also made sure he’d get the opportunity to add to that number, as he just recently helped his squad advance to the second round of the playoffs.

In six postseason games this season, the 6-1 183-pound goaltender is 4-1-1, with a 2.07 goals-against-average, and a .922 save percentage as the Mustangs finished off La Ronge in six games.

As for last season, while the Mustangs fell in seven games to Yorkton, Favreau managed a 3-2-2 record with a 2.26 goals-against average, and a.926 save percentage.

And, someone else who helped push the organization to the next round, joining the Humboldt Broncos and the Battlefords North Stars, was rookie forward David Rioux.

In four games this past week, the 18-year-old found the back of the net three times and added a pair of assists.

This included an impressive four-point performance in the Mustangs’ 8-2 win in game six to close out their series with the Ice Wolves.

Because of his five-point week, the Lorraine Quebec product won the league’s DirectWest Rookie of the Week award.
