Muenster ball player makes Major League debut

A baseball player from Muenster recently made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut.

Logan Hofmann, 23-year-old pitcher, suited up for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday and faced the Atlanta Braves.

The 5-foot-10 right-hander came in in relief in the bottom of the eighth and recorded two outs.

And while it was just a spring training game as the two teams battled it out in the Grapefruit League, Hofmann explained the moment was one he won’t soon forget.

“Even though it was a spring training game, it’s still a cool experience. You’re in front of the crowd and everything, and the Braves had their big league lineup going, so it’s a pretty cool experience,” he said.

“It’s been the goal since I’ve been a kid playing in Muenster. I never really thought it was a realistic goal until I kept pitching well. Now that I’m in the minor leagues, I have the opportunity to make it to the big leagues one day. I just got to wait my turn again, continue to pitch well and see what happens in the future.”

Selected in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB draft, the Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Muenster Red Sox and Team Saskatchewan alum has pitched parts of two seasons in the Pirates organization.

In that time he’s posted a combined 4.56 earned-runs-average in 48 appearances (13 starts) and has 128 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings.

Hofmann did allow two runs in the outing, however, he said it was a good teaching moment.

“I think every outing we have is a learning experience, whether it’s a good one or a bad one, obviously mine didn’t go quite as I wanted on Sunday but I guess learn from that. Take it into the start of the season, know what I did wrong, what I can improve on and you kind of just got to forget about the bad ones,” Hofmann added.

“Once you’re done with it, you can’t look back on it too much because one bad thing isn’t gonna hurt you. But if you keep thinking about it, I guess it will, so I would say just move forward and have a good start to the season.”

Hofmann was also previously a member of the Moose Jaw Miller Express of the Western Canadian Baseball League, back in 2018.

He was originally drafted in the 35th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019, but opted not to sign and instead, headed off to college.

Hofmann will begin this season in the minor leagues, however, the level is still unknown, as he continues to work his way back to the Majors.
