Supporters of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge look to refurbish weathered home

It’s a facility that has housed senior citizens in the northeast for decades, but the age starting to show on the building has created a desperate need to refurbish it.

Amidst the cracks and weathered walls of the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge stands a dedicated group of volunteers constantly fundraising to make sure the building stays for years to come.

The Quill Plains Centennial Lodge is based in Watson and has been in operation since the 1960s. But as Norma Weber with the Quill Plains Health Care Foundation explains, there is a lot of work needed for the centre.

“Our building is very worn. In the next 20 years, we are going to need a lot of beds,” she said, especially with the original, first wing of the facility.

“Our doorways are narrow; our hallways are narrow and it’s really not conducive to having residents in there anymore.”

Weber added all three wings are in need of refurbishing as they are very worn.

The organization helps supply equipment and furnishings to the lodge which has 53 beds and over 100 employees. Over 20 nearby municipalities use the facility.

Weber is encouraging nearby residents to think about the lodge and the people they care for as they carry out several fundraisers in the near future.

“We’ve had many of them already, we’ve had many more and there’s something there for everybody.”

A couple of those fundraisers include a beef raffle and an upcoming High Tea event, which Weber said is almost sold out.
