Mustangs season ends after loss to North Stars

Apr 6, 2023 | 12:20 PM

The Melfort Mustangs season has come to a close in the SJHL semi-finals, after a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Battlefords North Stars.

The Mustangs fell behind 3-0 after the first period after goals from Alex Izyk, Holden Doell, and Steven Kesslering. However, the Mustangs wouldn’t back down in this one, clawing back to make things 3-2 after goals from Zac Somers and Boston Maxwell.

Although that’s about as close as Melfort would get, and it wasn’t for trying as Battlefords notched two more third period goals from Kian Bell to put the nail in the Mustangs coffin.

Mustang captain Ben Tkachuk said even though they fell in four straight, he’s proud of how the group battled.

“That’s a heck of a group in there,” he said. “Fought tooth and nail till the end, banged up. Just so much character in there.”

Tkachuk, in his last junior game, thanked Melfort and the fans and the community for his four years with the club.

“Melfort’s been just everything to me,” Tkachuk said. “It means a lot.”

Likely echoing a number of the players in the room, Tkachuk said he’s going to remember the players he went to battle with.

“The guys,” he said. “Just hanging out, coming to the rink everyday, just laughing, and just having fun with the guys.”

Tkachuk, along with Boston Maxwell, Joel Favreau, Leyton Holoien, Hayden Tuba, Kevin Minnoch, Dawson Leroux, and Clarke Huxley are the graduating players this season.
