Minnoch Commits to Red Deer Polytechnic Kings

The Melfort Mustangs have announced that one of their graduating players has committed to a post-secondary hockey career.

Kevin Minnoch, the 2002-born defenceman, has decided to join the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for the 2023-24 season.

“Red Deer is a great team that’s always at the top of the standings,” said Minnoch in a press release sent to northeastNOW. “Not to mention winning the championship this past season. They play a fast style of hockey and it seems like a good fit for me along with getting a good education. I’m very excited to be part of the Kings.”

The Sherwood Park, Alta., product, spent the last two seasons in blue and green, racking up a total of 61 points in 93 combined games.

This past season, in 50 games, he finished the regular season tied for the most goals among SJHL blue liners with 13. Adding 30 assists, Minnoch was also third in the league in points by a d-man. Meanwhile, in nine playoff games, he had six points.

As for the 2021-22 season, Minnoch played 27 regular season games, scoring five times and adding five helpers, good for nine points. He would then go on to add three assists in seven playoff games as well.

Prior to his time in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Minnoch spent two years with his hometown Sherwood Park Crusaders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

He played in a total of 34 games during that stretch, scoring one goal and adding six assists for seven points.

When Minnoch arrives in central Alberta, he will be welcomed by a familiar face, as 2021-22 Mustang, Nolan Doell, is currently a member of the champion Kings, having suited up for them last season.
