The washrooms at the Convention Centre in Humboldt are getting a facelift.

On Monday council approved a renovation worth about $120,000 to the washrooms in the centre, which is part of Humboldt’s Uniplex.

Community and leisure services director Michael Ulriksen told council the need for renovations was identified a few years ago, but because the city was looking at the possibility of major changes involving the convention centre, the work was not done.

“We’ve now refocused back our attention on the convention centre and trying to figure out what we can do to improve it and to build into the directive from council to try and bring more events and activities to the community,” Ulriksen said.

Councillors agreed.

“I’m in favour of this,” Coun. Rob Muench said. “We’ve always been trying to make sure our facilities are utilized effectively. If people are happy renting our facilities, they’re going to come back again.”

A report to council said the renovations will be top to bottom, including flooring, walls, lighting, countertops, and fixtures.

“The project would significantly improve the look and functionality of the washroom facilities,” said the report, which added while the city has done renovations to the arena, curling rink, and aquatic centre in the Uniplex, the convention centre has been mostly untouched.

The report recommends getting the work done in a “window of opportunity” between Aug. 14 and Sept. 24 of this year, when the Centre is not booked.

“We believe that our envisioned upgrades to the space could be accommodated within this timeframe, but only if proponents are given enough lead time to procure supplies and schedule required labour,” the report said.

Money for the project will come from the Uniplex reserve fund, it added.

Besides the Convention Centre, Humboldt’s Uniplex also includes Humboldt’s Elgar Petersen Arena, Curling Rink, and Aquatic Centre.
