Highway 9 around Hudson Bay once again ranked among worst roads in province

Highway 9 is being ranked one of the worst Saskatchewan roads for the fourth time in six years.

CAA held its annual ‘Worst Roads’ campaign with the major provincial artery placing 9^th on the list for the conditions around the Town of Hudson Bay.

The section of the road is filled with ruts and potholes.

Hudson Bay Councillor Mel Cadrain told northeastNOW it’s disappointing that people in the area have had to deal with this for upwards of 10 years.

“It sticks outs like a bit of a sore thumb, it’s at the point where it’s deteriorated and definitely needs an upgrade.”

Highway 9, specifically around Hudson Bay, was ranked as the fifth-worst road in 2018 and the third-worst road in 2021 and 2022.

Cadrain explained the town and industry representatives have continued to reach out to the province on the issue, however, little has been done.

“They’ve been patching and trying to get by with maintenance but it’s at the point where it’s rutted, potholed, and needs a complete upgrade,” he said.

He’s hoping for the road to be paved with a heavy amount of asphalt since it’s a main traveling point for different industries with heavy machinery such as forestry and agriculture.

Cadrain also sits on the Northeast Area Transportation Planning Committee which has named Highway 9 as the most important corridor in the region for multiple years.

In an email to northeastNOW, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Highways said they spent around $325,000 in routine maintenance on the road around Hudson Bay.

They added multiple projects have been done on sections of the road over the past couple of years. This includes repaving between Usherville and Highway 983, which will see some repairs happen in 2023, and repaving from Whitewood to south of the Qu’Appelle Valley.

Meanwhile, the two worst roads in the province are both found around the Town of Eston.

Here are the top 10 worst roads in order.

1. Saskatchewan 44, Eston.

2. Saskatchewan 30, Eston.

3. Coteau Street West, Moose Jaw.

4. Highway 13, Redvers.

5. Saskatchewan 5, Buchanan.

6. Butte Street, Pilot Butte.

7. Saskatchewan 9, Whitewood.

8. Saskatchewan 123, Petaigan/Ravendale/Pemmican Portage.

9. Highway 9, Hudson Bay.

10. Old Highway 35, White Fox.
