BHP offering scholarships to local prospective post-secondary students

In partnership with Carlton Trail College, BHP is now accepting applications for its 2023 Jansen Project Scholarship Program.

Starting at the beginning of May, the program will administer scholarships to students from regional communities who are considering post-secondary education.

BHP has run this program every year since 2012, awarding over $647,000 in scholarships to 249 student recipients.

“At Jansen, we are building the mine of the future, which means we are also helping to build the workforce of the future. Now in the eleventh year of the Jansen Project Scholarship Program, we are thrilled to continue to play a part in local students fulfilling their post-secondary goals,” said Simon Thomas, President Potash, BHP.

Meanwhile, Carlton Trail College has administered the program since the beginning, by reaching out to schools, communities, and youth within the region, to advise them of the opportunities that this scholarship provides when pursuing post-secondary education.

“We know that the future of mining will need all kinds of skill sets. And so this scholarship program really provides a nice financial boost for students from within this larger region, who are pursuing post-secondary education and training opportunities,” said Jennifer Brooks, CTC advancement and external affairs.

“As an educational partner, we are pleased to continue to support access to further education and training for regional students by administering BHP’s scholarship program,” added Amy Yeager, Carlton Trail College’s President and CEO.

At minimum, 20 scholarships will be available to students from eligible schools and communities located in proximity to the Jansen Project site, who are graduating high school this year or in recent years, are under the age of 30, and are attending a recognized post-secondary program for the first time.

Eligible schools, communities and First Nations include Annaheim; Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation; Day Star First Nation; Englefeld; Fishing Lake First Nation; George Gordon First Nation; Humboldt; Imperial; Kawacatoose First Nation; Lanigan; LeRoy; Muenster; Muskowekwan First Nation; Punnichy; Quill Lake; Raymore; Watrous; Watson; and Wynyard.

“BHP’s commitment to Jansen extends beyond the mine to create a positive impact in the surrounding communities and local First Nations. This includes supporting the development of the skills and workforce needed to take part in the economic growth and job opportunities that Jansen brings to the region,” added BHP.

“The BHP Jansen Scholarship Program is an important part of this… through helping local students in secondary studies we are giving back to the local region and helping to foster a local talent pipeline for decades to come.”

Scholarship totals will range around the $2,500 mark, with the application deadline on June 15.

Other application requirements require basic personal information, as well as writing some essay questions.

Students also don’t have to be applying directly to Carlton Trail College, as there are other accredited post-secondary education or training institutions.

Prior scholarship recipients have studied engineering, science, and technology, they’ve entered trade space programs, participated in apprenticeships, and have even explored other areas of study such as education, business, and healthcare, among others.
