The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) Stars are bringing home some hardware from the Fred Sasakamoose Chief Thunderstick National Hockey Championship in Saskatoon.

The Stars were edged 3-2 in the National Championship game, falling to the Cross Lake Islanders from Central Manitoba.

PBCN finished second in Pool C to clinch a spot in the playoffs, finishing only behind the OCN Winterhawks (Man.). From there the Stars worked their way through the playoff rounds, downing the Pessamit Montagnais (Que.) 3-2 in the round of 16 before blanking the Whitefish Flyers (Sask.) 3-0 in the quarters. PBCN then went on to face pool rivals OCN in the semis to advance to the finals where they fell to Cross Lake.

During last year’s tournament, the Stars finished second in pool B with a 2-1-1 record (W-L-T). Following round-robin play, PBCN met the Canoe Lake Young Guns in round one of the playoffs where they were held off the scoreboard and fell 1-0.

For Cross Lake, they defeated the Eagle Lake Chiefs (Ont.) , Canoe Lake Young Guns (Sask.), and Norway House Bruins (Man.) in that order to get to claim their first National Championship.
