The Melfort Mustangs will welcome a new defenseman to the team for next season.

Kaden Phillips, a 2005-born player announced his commitment to the SJHL team on Friday.

A product of Olds, Alta, Phillips spent last season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes U18 AAA club where he served as team captain. He had one goal and an assist in 16 regular season games, adding another goal in the playoffs.

During the 2021/22 season, Phillips spent time with the Okanagan Hockey Academy with the U17 Prep team where he had 10 regular season assists and seven more in the playoffs.

In 2020, Phillips was drafted in the ninth round, 192nd overall in the WHL Bantam Draft.

“Kaden is a strong defender that plays the game with a combination of skill and physicality,” said Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins. “Being a Captain this past season, we like his leadership and character that will be great assets to our dressing room.”

Phillips is the latest player to commit to the Mustangs following forward Mathieu Pigeon, defenceman Riley Cormier, and forward Nate Tillmanns who announced their commitments earlier this year.
