A northeast junior golfer has qualified for a national event, later this summer.

Jaxon Blevins, out of Melfort, finished tied for third at a tournament this past weekend, down in Dakota Dunes, which officially qualified him.

Blevins will compete at the Notah Begay III Canadian Junior Golf Championship July 31 and August 1, at the Kanawaki Golf Club in Kahnawake, Quebec.

“It was a great experience, thought it was lots of fun, kind of tried to take a shot by shot mindset, next shot is most important one, and kind of just stay in a moment,” he told northeastNOW.

The championship will feature four divisions for both boys and girls with limited spots available.

Boys 16-18: five spots, boys 14-15: five spots, boys 12-13: four spots, boys 10-11: three spots, girls 16-18: five spots, girls 14-15: five spots, girls 12-13: four spots, and girls 10-11: three spots.

“I kind of knew about it [the potential qualifier], it wasn’t really my goal but I knew it would have been cool to qualify and I did, so it was good,” Blevins added. “I’m really excited, I’ve never really gone anywhere for golf, so it’ll be lots of fun, and I think some of the other guys [from the tournament] are going too, so that’ll be good.”

The tournament in Quebec will also serve as a qualifier, as there is the potential to go down to Louisiana and play on the Golf Channel (television) for their ‘final/national championship’.

That championship would include players from all over both Canada and the United States.

“It’s kind of been a goal, my grandpa’s always joked with me about playing on TV, so hopefully, this is my shot,” Blevins explained. “My family is a golfing family, so I’ve golfed up in Elkridge for a long time. My dad’s a pretty good golfer, same with my mom on my other side, so they’ve kind of pushed me in golf, and I’ve always loved going out to the course.”

It will be hosted at Koasati Pines Golf Course in Louisiana, US November 4-6 (boys) and November 9-11 (girls).

It will be televised in prime time that will be airing over four hours of broadcast time which has never been done before.

“It’s great [to represent my hometown], Melfort is obviously a small town so to just kind of put it on the map I guess, it’ll be lots of fun kind of representing the course and just the town from the northeast,” mentioned Blevins.
