Kinistino high school student to suit up for Team Canada

A grade 12 student from Kinistino will soon get the chance to represent his country.

Levi Hare will be wearing the Canadian flag next month in Alberta, for the Can-Am Bowl.

Hare previously competed in a game as a member of Team Saskatchewan against Team Alberta in a blowout loss.

There was, however, a silver lining as that was the moment he was selected to Team Canada.

“It was really fun to play for Team Sask, even though we lost, it was so cool just to have the experience of playing for them, but it would have been nice to win,” Hare told northeastNOW. “It’ll be really cool to represent my country, I’ve never like had anything like that, where I get to play for my country, but it’d be really cool to represent Canada and wear the maple leaf.”

The CanAm Bowl is a six-man all-star game that showcases the USA (Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming, & Texas) against Canada (Saskatchewan & Alberta).

Players selected to represent their country must be a high school graduate of the current year in which the game is played and have played at least their grade 12 year as a member of a six-man football program.

“It’s a big change from being from a small town and having a few friends come and watch to play for Canada and having it live-streamed, that’ll be really cool,” added Hare.

“Americans seem kind of scary to play football against, it’s kind of intimidating playing against Americans because they seem so tough and stuff, but I’ve never really played anything like that against them, so it’ll be interesting to see how they play.”

The CanAm Bowl began in July of 1997 when an American all-star team made the trip to Canada to play a Saskatchewan all-star team in Porcupine Plain, which was hosted by Bjorkdale. The USA won that inaugural game 40 – 22.

Canadian players were selected for CanAm this year through the Saskatchewan vs. Alberta all-star process.

The Bowl will mark the final game of Hare’s football career, as he doesn’t plan to pursue it at the post-secondary level.

“I am going to university in Prince Albert and I don’t want to move away from home, so I’m just gonna stay in PA and I won’t pursue any football. It’s gonna be my last game, so that’ll be bittersweet, but it’ll probably be one of the funnest games I’ve ever played, so there’ll be lots of emotions, I’m sure.”
