A name familiar to the northeast area has had his dream come true.

Former Humboldt Bronco, Matthew Perkins, has been selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The five-foot-11, 156-pound centreman was taken in the fourth round with the 119th overall pick.

The Balgonie native spent the 2021/22 season with the green and gold, posting 59 points in 57 games (23 goals, 39 assists).

This past season, the left-shot 19-year-old suited up for the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL).

In 60 contests with them, he scored 15 times, while adding 29 helpers, good for 44 points (51st in league scoring).

Perkins has committed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth (NCAA Division 1) and will head there this fall.

He can stay there for up to four years without the Canucks losing his rights.

NHL Central Scouting put him as the 165th-best North American skater, heading into this year’s draft.

In January of 2022, Perkins was also ranked 117th in the NHL mid-season draft rankings, while moving up to 106th by May of that year, ahead of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Perkins is set to report to Vancouver’s camp on Friday.
